RAPID DETECTION OF THE AMERICAN COCKROACH, PERIPLANETA AMERICANA, INFESTATIONS BY SEX PHEROMONE TRAPS WITH PERIPLANONE-B

Abstract:
Rapid detection of American cockroaches by traps baited with Periplanone B, a synthetic sex pheromone of the American cockroach, was conducted in three sub-tropical cities, Okinawa (Japan), Taipei (Taiwan), and Honolulu (USA), and in a laboratory in Shizuoka, Japan. One night trapping with Periplanone-B traps caught 14.2 times as many male American cockroaches as did the control traps. In the laboratory arean test with male adult cockroaches, the pheromone jar trapped 68% of the cockroaches in the shelter, during 10 trials over 5 nights. Control jars trapped 6% of the total cockroaches. Ninety three percent of the trapped cockroaches were caught within the 4 hours between 7:00 and 11:00 PM in 10 trials in 2 areas. In the laboratory arena tests with mixed sexes and stages of American cockroaches, significantly greater number of male adults were caught in the traps.
